This little amakihi (Chlorodrepanis virens) is perched on a lichen covered post along a fence line. These old posts, sourced from native trees in the area, are often only remaining vestiges of the primary forest that once grew in its place. Fencing is a critical tool in protecting native forests today. As Hawaiian forests struggle to survive against threats of invasive species and climate change, these posts remain like ghosts standing guard over the next generation.
